Makara Sankranti, also known as Maghi or Sankranthi, is a Hindu festival dedicated to the deity Surya (sun). In Hinduism, the Sun is worshipped and known as Surya Deva who nourishes all living beings on the Earth.

The festival is celebrated every year in the lunar month of Magha (January) and marks the first day of the sun’s transit into Makara Rashi (Capricorn), marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days.

Festivities include colorful decorations, kite flying, Donation to children’s and Hindu priests singing and dancing, bonfires, and feasts.

The first day of Sankranti is known as Uttarayan and the next day of Uttarayan is known as Vasi Uttarayan or stale Uttarayan. The day is considered highly auspicious and is dedicated to Lord Surya.

Flying kite is one of the most popular events during Uttarayan. Wearing black clothes on Sankranti

Black is often considered to be the color of Makar Sankranti, even as black is widely heralded as an inauspicious color when it comes to festivals and religious activities. The reason for association with Sankranti is, however, more of a customary scientific belief than a religious one.

The black color is known as an absorber of the rays of the Sun, and since during Makar Sankranti, the Sun begins its journey towards the Northern Hemisphere, people believe that wearing the black color will help them absorb all the good energy of the Sun as well as keep them warm during the chilly winter days of celebration.
