Ganesh Vinayaka Chaturthi 2024

Ganesh Vinayaka Chaturthi 2024 also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi. Ganesha Chaturthi is a famous Hindu festival and celebrated throughout India. Ganesha Chaturthi is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and it is observed as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha. While celebrated all over India, the celebrations are the most elaborate and the grandest in Maharashtra, Telangana, and Karnataka. Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad are some of the most significant cities to watch and enjoy Ganesha Chaturthi celebrations.

Ganesh Vinayaka Chaturthi 2024

Ganesha Chaturthi is also known as Siddhi Vinayaka Chaturthi and Ganesha Chauth. It is considered the most important day to worship Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha is considered the God of wisdom and remover of all obstacles. He is worshipped first among all Gods and before starting any Puja or ritual.

Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha. Although there are contradictory views on the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, most people celebrate it on Shukla Chaturthi during the Bhadrapada lunar month, and the day is popularly known as Ganesha Chaturthi.

As per Ganesha Purana and Skanda Purana, Lord Ganesha was born on Shukla Chaturthi during Bhadrapada month. However, as per Shiva Dharma Lord Ganesha was born on Krishna Chaturthi during Magha month.

In North India, Magha Krishna Chaturthi is observed as Sakat Chauth. Although Sakat Chauth is not observed as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, it is considered a significant day to worship Lord Ganesha. In Maharashtra and Konkan regions, Shukla Chaturthi during Magha month is observed as Ganesha Jayanti and celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha apart from Ganesha Chaturthi. The reason for observing Ganesha Jayanti during Shukla Paksha and not during Krishna Paksha as mentioned in Shiva Dharma is unclear.

Ganesha Chaturthi is an optional gazetted holiday in India. Hence, most government offices, businesses, schools, and colleges remain open during Ganesha Chaturthi.

Anant Chaturdashi which falls after 10 days of Ganesha Chaturthi is considered significant to bid farewell to Lord Ganesha. Anant Chaturdashi is the culmination day of Ganesha Chaturthi celebrations when the idols of Lord Ganesha are offered to the water body through Visarjan and immersion.

Compared to Ganesha Chaturthi, public life is significantly affected on the day of Ananta Chaturdashi as the grand street processions are taken out with much fun and frolic. The roads and streets are blocked with devotees of Lord Ganesha. The movement of vehicular traffic on some significant roads is blocked due to several Ganesha processions.

In some states, the day of Anant Chaturdashi is declared a dry day to control and minimize untoward incidents. The authorities keep vigil to prevent any communal tension getting escalating during the Ganesha procession. On a dry day, all liqueur shops remain closed and all hotels and restaurants except Five Stars are prohibited from serving alcohol by local authorities.

Anant Chaturdashi is listed under restricted government holidays. Hence, individuals can take a day off on the day of Ganesha Visarjan. The system of restricted holidays in India gives individuals the flexibility to take time off to celebrate those festivals that are important to their region and religion.

Lord Ganesha is the embodiment of three virtues namely Buddhi, Siddhi, and Riddhi known as wisdom, spirituality, and prosperity respectively. Lord Ganesha is the personification of Buddhi Himself. The other two virtues are personified as Goddesses and considered to be the consorts of Lord Ganesha. Most of the artworks show Ganesha flanked by two consorts who are named Riddhi and Siddhi. It is believed that Riddhi and Siddhi were daughters of Lord Brahma who himself conducted the wedding ceremony of Lord Ganesha.

As per Shiva Purana, Lord Ganesha had two sons who were named as Shubh and Labh. Shubh and Labh are personifications of auspiciousness and profit respectively. Shubh was Goddess Riddhi’s son, and Labh was Goddess Siddhi’s son.

There are different opinions on the marital status of Lord Ganesha. According to one opinion, Shri Ganesha is an unmarried Brahmachari. However, Mudgala and Shiva Purana are considered as authority on the marital status of Lord Ganesha and both Puranas talk about the marital life of Lord Ganesha.

12 Jyotirlinga legends mantras location all about shiva Jyotirlinga

Ganesh Chaturthi Visarjan marks the conclusion of the ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which celebrates the birth of Ganesha. According to tradition, the visarjan (immersion) of Ganesha idols symbolizes the cycle of birth, life, and rebirth, reflecting the belief in the impermanence of life.

The story behind the Visarjan relates to Ganesha’s visit to Earth. It is believed that during Ganesh Chaturthi, Ganesha descends from his celestial abode to Earth to bless his devotees with prosperity, wisdom, and the removal of obstacles. At the end of the festival, the immersion of Ganesha idols in water signifies Ganesha’s return to Mount Kailash, his divine home, to rejoin his parents, Bhagwan Shiva and Maa Parvati.

The Visarjan also represents the devotees’ heartfelt request to Ganesha to return the following year, continuing the cycle of his divine presence and blessings. The immersion is performed with great devotion, accompanied by prayers, singing, and dancing, as devotees bid farewell to Ganesha with the hope of his return next year.

As per the tradition, it is believed that if a person sees the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi, they’ll be cursed with accusations of theft, or as known in the legend, the Mithya Dosha. Hence, we should not see the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi.

As the legend goes, it is said that God Chandra (moon), who was very handsome and took huge pride in his looks, once mocked Shri Ganesha for his appearance by making sarcastic remarks about his big belly and elephant head.

Shri Ganesha had had enough and decided to teach Chandra a lesson. Ganesha cursed Chandra saying that no one shall ever look at his beauty again and whoever looked at the moon, will have to face false allegations and invite a bad reputation.

Devastated, Chandra realized his mistake and apologized to Lord Ganesh…

Ganesh Chaturthi is observed twice every month. The one that falls in the Krishna Paksha is called Vinayak Chaturthi and the one that occurs in Shukla Paksha is called Sankashti Chaturthi. People offer prayers to Bhagwan Ganesha and observe fast.

The ten-day celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi symbolizes the journey of Lord Ganesha from his heavenly abode to Earth, where he is welcomed with open arms. The first day marks the grand installation of Ganesha idols in homes and public places. Devotees perform elaborate rituals, including the Pranapratishtha, invoking the deity’s presence in the idol. Days 2 to 9 are filled with offerings, prayers, and cultural performances. Devotees offer modak (a sweet delicacy), flowers, coconuts, and other items as a symbol of their devotion. Cultural events, including music and dance, are organized in the evenings to celebrate the deity’s presence.
